Nationality through a parent and naturalization are different processes. The correct route depends on family ties, residence history and the applicable legal conditions.
Nationality through a Dominican parent
For people born abroad to a Dominican father or mother.
The route generally requires transcription of the foreign birth certificate before the Central Electoral Board (JCE).Ordinary naturalization

Resident
A resident may live legally in the country while retaining their original nationality and passport, but does not vote in Dominican elections.
Citizen
A citizen acquires Dominican nationality and political rights such as voting. The Dominican Republic permits dual nationality, subject also to the laws of the other country.

Does marriage to a Dominican citizen grant citizenship automatically?
No. Marriage may provide a specific route, but the applicant must satisfy the requirements and submit a naturalization file to the competent authority.
What if I was born abroad to a Dominican parent?
Recognition through descent may apply. The foreign birth record, proof of the parent’s Dominican nationality and the appropriate transcription or registration procedure should be reviewed.
Are residency and citizenship the same?
No. Residency is an immigration status allowing a foreign national to live lawfully in the country. Citizenship makes the person a Dominican national and has different legal effects.
Why are police records and migration-history certificates requested?
In naturalization matters, these records help document conduct and the applicant’s period of lawful presence under the applicable route.
Will there be an interview or assessment?
The Ministry of Interior and Police procedure for naturalization by marriage includes file review, fingerprints, a photograph, a Dominican culture assessment and an interview with the spouse.
Can I keep my original nationality?
The Dominican Republic permits dual nationality, but retaining the original nationality also depends on the law of the other country. Both systems should be reviewed.
