Which nationality route applies?
Nationality through a parent and naturalization are different processes. The correct route depends on family ties, residence history and the applicable legal conditions.
Nationality through a Dominican parent
For people born abroad to a Dominican father or mother.
The route generally requires transcription of the foreign birth certificate before the Central Electoral Board (JCE).Ordinary naturalization
For foreign nationals who meet the required permanent-residence period and other applicable conditions.
The Ministry of Interior and Police requires immigration certifications, background records and proof of financial standing, among other documents.Naturalization through marriage
For foreign nationals married to a Dominican citizen who meet the applicable requirements.
Marriage does not grant nationality automatically; the corresponding application must be filed and approved.Privileged naturalization
An exceptional route granted by presidential decree under current law.
It is not an ordinary or automatic route and remains subject to presidential decision and the required file.TWO DIFFERENT STATUSES
Residency is not citizenship.
Resident
A resident may live legally in the country while retaining their original nationality and passport, but does not vote in Dominican elections.
Citizen
A citizen acquires Dominican nationality and political rights such as voting. The Dominican Republic permits dual nationality, subject also to the laws of the other country.

FAMILY
Family-based immigration
A foreign-born child of a Dominican parent may seek recognition of Dominican nationality by registering the foreign birth certificate. Their foreign spouse may then evaluate a family-reunification residence route.
